Y is for Jane Yolen

Born:  February 11, 1939

Excellent BooksHow Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight, over 100 other picture books and over 300 other books.  Many have won awards.

From Her Life:  Jane was captain of the girl's Basketball Team in high school and grew her hair down to her waist in college!

Advice for Aspiring Writers:   Jane's website has a whole page of musings and advice on writing.  The following line makes me laugh and shudder at the same time.  And it seems appropriate for the second to last day of the A-Z Challenge.  She said, "Know this about being published: it is out of your hands."

Jane Yolen is awesome! She's such a prolific author. Great advice, too; the only thing within our control is to write and polish the best story we possibly can!

Oh, I love Jane Yolen, too! Have you ever read her "Dimity Duck" picture book? I ran across it in a sale bin at Krogers for $2.99--a favorite now of a special little three-year old in our family. Sweet book. Thanks for featuring a fantastic author and writers' encourager...

I don't know many picture book authors... But that line you quoted is quite sobering! "It is out of your hands."

I read Jane Yolen ages ago. Her writing is magical. Off to see her website.

Kenda, I've seen Dimity Duck, but I haven't read it yet. It looks like a lot of fun!

Rachel, I think that's the case with most publishing. You do your best, submit it, and know that once it's off it is "out of your hands!"

Medeia, You'll love her website! It's wonderful!

Can you imagine running around a basketball court with hair that long? Talk about some serious defense!
I've actually not heard of her books before (and I know that's sad, because I read a lot) but my son is in a Dinosaur phase, so I will have to be looking into this :)
Thanks!

Kickboxing Los Angeles, I'm sure she tied it up if was long then too, but it would still be pretty impressive! We've been going through a dinosaur phase here too, and it's been a lot of fun!
