Picture Books, Postcards, and Pitches

I have enough to tell you that I'm beginning to feel like a volcano so full of fabulous things to share that I'll just have to let them fly out!

Picture Books
The best thing you can do if you want to write picture books is to read and study them!  Here are three excellent examples of very well-written picture books.  Children love them and adults (at least this one!) can enjoy reading them over...and over and over.  They all have a creative story line with an unexpected ending.

  1. Edwina The Dinosaur Who Didn't Know She Was Extinct by Mo Willems
  2. Troll Teacher by Vivan Vande Velde
  3. There Was a Coyote Who Swallowed a Flea by Jennifer Ward and Illustrated by Steve Gray

Postcards
I am organizing a Postcard Exchange for my preschooler and still have several openings.  If you would like to be involved, please email me!  It will involve sending at least six postcards throughout the United States and to a few other countries.  If you want more details, please visit my family blog here.

Pitches
Susanna Hill, a children's book author, hosts a weekly Would You Read It? meme where she posts a pitch and her readers comment on whether or not they would be interested in the book.  Today, my unpublished story, Witches Don't Dance is the pitch for the week!  I'd love to read your comments on her blog about your reaction to my pitch!

How often do you post on your blogs?  I'm considering posting more than once a week.  How often do you like to see new posts on the blogs you visit?  I love to hear from you!

Carla, Thanks for sharing your pitch. I made a comment on the post. Good luck with your story.

I'll have to check out those picture books for my nieces and nephews. :)

I post on my blog 3 times a week. It works well for me! I think that's a good amount of posts because there's often something new when people come around, but it's not so much that anyone will miss something important.

Heading on over to check out your pitch!

Thanks for your comments, Stacy! I really appreciate them!

Thanks, Lola!

Laura, They've made it to libraries, but I think any child would be happy to own them! They are a lot of fun! I can see 3 times a week pretty easily...except when I have one of "those" weeks! I do like your supply of new material, though! And thanks for commenting on the pitch!

Congrats on your pitch! I hope the feedback is helpful.

I try to post at least two times a week. Even that is hard sometimes. As for the blogs I read, I can get a little overwhelmed by how many there are that I would like to get to. So I kind of like it when there aren't so many.

Btw, I have an award for you over at my blog:)

Hey, Carla! Thanks for your advice!

And thanks, too, for your earlier post about children's magazines who accept submissions. I found one from your list to submit my work to, so many thanks!

And BTW: I post once a week because my posts are lengthy!

Ruth, The feedback has been very helpful! And thanks for the award! I totally understand what you mean about too many posts--sometimes I visit a blog and read 5-6 posts because I missed them during the week. ;)

Lauren, I'm so glad they were helpful! Good luck with your submission! I'm usually partial for shorter posts, but I love reading yours--they may be lengthy, but they are full of good information!

I usually do 2 posts a week, (T & Th), but sometimes, if I have a lot of writing related events to talk about (book signings, etc), I post 3x a week. :P

Happy weekend!

Congrats on the pitch!

I post every day, M-F. It's a little daunting, though. But I'm convinced it gets more people to my blog more often.

My favorite picture book of all time is Saturday Night at the Dinosaur Stomp. The only one I can stand reading over and over and over. It's really fabulous.

Aha! PB's I haven't heard of. I love finding new (to me) PB's. Thanks for the recommendations.

I usually post twice a week. I used to post three times a week, which is ideal, I think, but it was took much to keep up with. I know some who post nearly every day, and that's overboard in my opinion, unless they keep it short and sweet.

Have a great week. :)

The how-many-times-to-post-a-week question is a good one! I always post twice a week, and often three times. I really don't like to do any more than that because I think it gets overwhelming to readers - no one has that much time, and there are so many great blogs to read. But there are so many things I want to do that I can't fit into only 2-3 posts a week! I'm thinking of reworking my schedule to include one or two monthly items - you know, like an author spotlight on the third Thursday of every month or something.... It's all about organization, though... Thanks for mentioning Would You Read It!

Late to the game, but left my comment. Enjoyed your blog. I haven't been able to respond to some of the blogs for a while, so will try to more frequently.

Love your Three Ps! I used to blog twice a week, but I've found that with so much else to do, once a week means my content is better. I'd rather fewer posts but with higher quality from the blogs I follow.

Thanks for all the insights on how often you post!

Nutschell, Your blog is another one with long posts that I love--I feel like I need to take notes on them so I don't forget anything important!

Peggy, I need to check out that PB--I've never read it! Writing every day is impressive!

Michelle, I hope you enjoy the books!

Elizabeth, I love that picture too!

Susanna, I've thought about monthly themes too...I actually had plans to start one this month, but had to delay it because of sick kids. :( I suppose the beautiful thing about months is that they just keep coming!

Patricia, Thanks! I really appreciated all the comments that people left. I think I got a lot of useful ideas and feedback!

Amie, That's a great point! I don't want to sacrifice quality for quantity!

That book is very intense, but good.
